The Oath of the Vayuputras

Testament Vayuputras the third and final part of the Shiva trilogy of books that are written by Indian authors Amish Tripathi. This third part has not yet been released, but I thought for a brief overview of the book and record my thoughts about what could happen in the last part, which twists and turns that the reader can expect.

The first part of the trilogy, Shiva was the immortals of Meluha which was released in mid 2010 and got a lot of rave reviews on the plot and story. There were some who were a little critical about the type of language used in the Amish book, but with a second offer of the trilogy, The Secret of Nagas, the Amish managed to silence his critics. This book was published in 2011 and was a great success, and now all his fans are eagerly awaiting publication of the third and final installment of the trilogy, Shiva, Vayuputras Testament.

At the other end of the book, we saw that the Shiva and his army were aligned with the Naga warriors after finding that the Nagas are not all evil people made them out to be. Shiva is united with his friend Brahaspati, whom he had feared dead. Now the question in everyone's mind is that if the Nagas are not bad people, then who is behind all the evil and destruction that hit the country Meluha.

In my opinion, this is what will form the main point of the third book in which Shiva will have to find the true source of evil in Meluha and find a way to destroy evil forever. Testament Vayuputras will also investigate the relationship between King Meluha and mysterious temple priests.

As with the first two books, Amish will re-spray the history and mythology in the form of the main story of the covenant Vayuputras. Shiva will have the biggest role to play in this final chapter as the highlight of his journey toward becoming a master of masters. We can also see some new characters being introduced to compliment the main one and I personally hope, the author introduces the comedic characters as well.

It is already quite a buzz around the online publication date Vayuputras Testament, but so far no date has been finalized. I'm pretty sure that this book will easily top the bestseller lists of all the public after considering the huge hype around the book.

The Royal Lockdown

Have you ever heard of a visual novel was published under the title "Royal Lock?" This is the story of the royal family who were expelled from their territory of the immortal witch who accused the Queen issued. The author, Candy Love, allegedly used a graphic from discontinued PC game called "The Sims" to create her visual novel.

After grabbing a copy of the first book in the series, I immediately fell in love with the characters and the story itself. Royal Family members need to fit in with the mortals are somehow related to how each of us wants to fit in the society we belong.

After successfully gaining employment and career advancement, the former Prince and Princess Laxius Vectra experience the same kind of conflict couples usually get especially when her mother would spend less time with family. This is the least of your worries, because even though every day, they slowly become mortal himself.

Laxius is obviously just a wizard-in-training, not a full pledged Magic-wielding individual. If he loses his power, they can never return to the Magic Kingdom, dimension, where they came from. Royal Lock gives us insight into your past and present life.

The witch, who was expelled from the Magic Kingdom is ruling over his people. Without them knowing, it has created a powerful potion no one has done before, a potion that can bring someone back from death. And to all the fear, it was decided to revive the late King of Levi, the former husband of Queen Gemma.

The witch said to the king Levi loved her first before Gemma. It gave him a ring to manipulate his every move. This ring can not remove a worn. People Magic Kingdom ruled by a witch with unimaginable powers no one has ever been seen before. While living in fear, people Magic Kingdom can not do anything but to abide by the rules of witches.

And with the royal family away from his kingdom, can not stop all contact if they become mortals. Royal Lockdown is a really great read for anyone looking for a novel with colorful illustrations. Candy Love vision is so clear that anyone reading the novel will surely be hooked into the story.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of visual and graphic novels. I give Royal Lock 5 / 5 stars. I'll wait for the next book in the series to read more about their lives.

Pigs In Heaven by Barbara

The first ever Barbara Kingsolver that I read was The Bean Trees, which I liked immensely. So I resolved to get hold of another BK book and when I saw Pigs in Heaven in my favorite book shop, Booksale, I bought it without any hesitation.

Pigs in Heaven turns out to be a sequel to The Bean Trees and I loved it as well. It is wonderful to see Taylor Greer now all grown up and mature and her daughter Turtle able to talk in complete sentences this time.

Pigs in Heaven begins three years after Taylor Greer decided to formally adopt Turtle, a 3-year old abused Indian girl left in her car while she is on her way to Kentucky. When Taylor and Turtle became instant celebrities after Turtle witnessed a freak accident at Hoover Dam, the relationship of Turtle and Taylor became the center of a cultural conflict of historic proportions. Will it be for the best interest of Turtle to go back to her roots in the Cherokee Nation or would it be best to just leave her with Taylor whom she already regards as her very own mother?

As usual, Barbara Kingsolver's prose never fails to amaze, and amuse, me. I must confess I am now a fan of Barbara Kingsolver and I resolve to read all of her books! (Goodbye, book buying ban resolution!). She is such a delight to read, and the allusions and allegories in Pigs in Heaven are simple yet profound.

I never had any idea about American Indians, except for some folklores I read while I was in high school. So it is wonderful to learn about Indians, more particularly Cherokee Indians, in this book. But more than an education about the tradition and culture of the Cherokee Nation, Pigs in Heaven is a colorful portrait of family love, relationships, and sense of belongingness. When does one say that he / she is in a family? Who are the persons you should call your family? Is family bound by blood or just by the simple idea that you feel you belong to one regardless of race or filial affiliation?

"But when you never put a name on things, you're just accepting that it's okay for people to leave when they feel like it."
"They leave anyway," Alice says. "My husbands went like houses on fire."

"But you do not have to accept it," Taylor insists. "That's what your family is, the people you will not let go of for anything." p. 328th

I must say that although I enjoyed The Bean Trees, I like Pigs in Heaven more. The additional characters like the quirky Barbie, the ever-so-in-love-with-Taylor Jax, and the empowered mother Alice, have all added color to the story. The lawyer, Annawake Fourkiller, is also of added interest and feels right close to home. The legal and ethical issues of adoption within the Cherokee Nation is very informative and interesting.

I love how the story wraps up just beautifully in the end. It is the kind of story that just makes you sigh of contentment after you turn the last page. Also, the resolution about the connection of the title of the book to the story is a revelation which will make the reader think long and deep. Pigs in Heaven is a very compelling story that I believe anyone can learn wonderful lessons from. I recommend that one should read The Bean Trees first before reading this book.

The Hunger Games

Flashplot: In the future post-apocalypse America, whether they're from the Capitol, or you're nothing more than a pawn used to support a very unusual way of life. You are entertained and entertainers. Sickest form of entertainment Capitol created the annual Hunger Games, each district must offer up two of their children to participate in this fight to the death competition in retaliation for participating in an unsuccessful rebellion. Sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen becomes districts eleven women is a tribute when her younger sister's place during the harvest. Any decision from that point forward could save her life or end it.

As a reader: Suzanne Collins had a string of successful young people before the Hunger Games books, so I was surprised when several of my students to recommend a title for me. I never expected, however, to be blown away with the sophistication of the writing and themes. This is one of those rare books that speaks to readers of all ages and all sexes. It is a twisted love story, wrenching coming-of-life stories, and action-packed adventure. What makes it truly a gem, though, as it uses a futuristic setting to force readers to examine many aspects of contemporary society. I immediately fell in love with Katniss, who narrates this book and others in the trilogy. It is a symbol of an unreliable narrator, but she is so strong that you believe even what I know is probably true. Supports the characters in the book are equally beautiful. They are flawed, and unique, and Collins developed carefully over each book and the trilogy, so that each page offers a new insight into somebody.

As a writer: I was in the book three before I realized what was off about writing this book. They are written in first person present tense, very rare storytelling choice, but one that works for this book. First, it builds the tension, you can not assume Katniss survives the way could a first-person narratives told in the past tense. Second, Collins is clearly a master at it. The fact that such a unique form of writing can go unnoticed meaning that the author is skilled at her craft. The reader is also in Katniss's head that it does not seem at all unnatural that the story will be told in present tense. As mentioned above, Collins is also a master of characterization. It creates a world in which a large chunk of the characters, those of the capital, might seem outrageous and unbelievable. She described them, after all, look at the way the image of performers in Cirque du Soleil show, but as we meet, love or hate his personality alone. The final skill I envy Collins for her creation of the world. As I mentioned above, this is not the author who is new to fantasy writing, but the detail with which she describes the world and a variety of settings, creatures, and the technology is amazing.

Bottom line: I think I've gushed enough. Read for yourself. Read to your kids. Read with your students. You will not need me to tell you that it is worth all nighter.

Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter

Larry Ott is the type of guy you would not want to take the time to learn. Referred to by the locals as "Scary Larry" Ott lives alone in the middle of nowhere, off the beaten path in rural Mississippi farmhouse. Son of the late engineer, he runs the only auto shop in the small town of Chabot, although rarely is the local visitors. His social Bane stems in part from a missing person case in the late seventies, which was never resolved, Larry was last seen with a young girl and is widely assumed that he was responsible for her death. Issues are further complicated by thirty-odd years later, when another girl goes missing in the present. Accusations fly fast and this time it was Larry, whose life is at stake.

Meanwhile, Silas Jones, Constable of Chabot, one of the loner himself, although he frequents a local bar and has a taste for loose women. The black man, he went to school with Silas (who is white) shortly after Chabot integration in the mid seventies. Since high school, Silas moved away from Chabot, and after college and a brief restriction in the army, decided to return home to deal with the police. Having made friends with Larry for a short period in high school, and because we do not know, force has become confused with the possibility of contacting Larry him upon his return. Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter Tom Franklin (author of Hell on the back) is intricately woven novel, slow-building page-turner with jolts of suspense and electrifying twists at the end of each chapter that make it difficult to set the book aside. Taking its name we are told, from Rome to the South, children learn how to help them decipher how to spell Mississippi, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter captures the subtleties of life in a small town in a beautiful place to dialogue and real interaction between the southern people.

Take for example the exchange between the Force and his mistress Angie, over the possibility of crime:

"Let the child. Tell me more."
"I need yall to run outside when you get a minute. Little dirt road at Chabot, from camping Cemetery Road".
"I know where he is staying. How come?"
"Only when one minute. See if it looks clean. It is not far from where yall at now."

He also praised for the characterization of-all, including minor characters are given enough detail and assigned its own idiosyncrasies that can give life. There are French, Silas 'superior, former game warden and Vietnam vet who has a penchant for tacky T-shirts, shrimp po' boys, and Coca-Cola. We meet Mrs. Voncille, city clerk, a woman know that tense, because it requires only one seat in her joint office near a window, just because there is no longer hates when someone leaves the toilet seat up, and was divorced a few times. Even Silas has its quirks, the nickname "32" because of his baseball number in high school.

If you are looking for storytelling at its best then look no further, you find it. Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter is all that diamond in the ruff that comes along once in a while, to satisfy readers' desire for mystery and adventure.

The American School

Short story, "The American School" of Kojima Nobuo is a somewhat humorous look at imagined (even likely) for a couple of Japanese English teachers who were forced to visit the newly established American School in Japan shortly after the end of World War II. The plot revolves around four main characters-Isa is a protagonist who is forced to learn English simply because he knows a few words and phrases, but hate language, because he can not speak well. Shibamoto the head of a procession of Japanese visiting the school (although we do not know much about him as a narrator rarely gives us his point of view). Yamada's overachieving extraction who speaks English well enough to continue with the American troops, and thus thinks I'm better than Jesus (put it in position antagonist) and Michiko, the only woman in the group, which was interesting to speak English better than Yamada. As their procession moves along to American schools, the reader has a chance to see the Japanese and American cultural traits that the interaction between U.S. troops riding in jeeps and native walks, as well as the behavior of American children in school.

One example of how the Americans seem to be arrogant and impatient in contrast to the Japanese and their ways. For example, Yamada's encounter with American soldiers in the jeep that was when he found that Yamada was the leader was running late for his appointment with U.S. officials, throw your hands in the air and drive off, saying sarcastically: "I am really very sorry you were able to I had to wait. " It rushed, a "must-be-in-time" attitude, verses more easy-going nature of Japanese seem to summarize, if you will, cultural differences between East and West.

The second example shows the differences in cultural characteristics occurs later. Isa and Michiko were inside the school waiting in line for a tour when Michiko sees two students holding hands in a "mutual affection". Michiko says: "Look at these two there-how disgusting!" which shows that neither Michiko never saw two people love holding hands before, or holding hands in public is not something generally accepted in Japanese culture at that time. Kojima Nobuo generally points to such cultural gaps and does not usually come directly from assertions that satire or culture. In this way, he shows tact in assuming that the reader is smart enough to make his or her own assumptions and judgments. When Michiko decline in their high heels and a principle of see what happened, we know that content is smug, arrogant American says, "Ah, yes. Starih kamikaze spirit."

In conclusion, the "American School" is a short well-written, sometimes satirical story that helps to consider a few of the many differences in cultural characteristics between Japan and the United States until the end of World War II.

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey

Does anyone really belongs to you? If you think the children or spouses in this respect, child snow will stop you cold.

In 1920 Mabel and Jack settled along the Wolverine in Alaska. They hope the challenge homesteading in the wild will erase years of grief and give them a fresh start. Instead, they believe that work and the isolation policy. Reduce the difficulties of everyday life away at their spirits. Money is scarce. I hope dimmed. As the cold bites, each trying to survive in their own way.

After a fresh snow, build snow child at the time of much-needed levity. When they wake up the next morning the snow child is knocked down and knit gloves and a scarf draped on it are gone.

Jack sees a small girl runs in snow. When Mabel glimpses blonde girl, that unites them. Jack hunting elk to keep them from starving in the winter. When ready to give up, a magical girl appears and leads him to Los. Food for the winter is assured.

A little snow girl, Faina is cold lashes, Cool Blue stare, and is always accompanied by the red wolf. It looks otherworldly and Mabel and Jack find her appearance and disappearance disturbing. They are still trying to maintain contact with her, but she is still elusive. Faina dictate the terms on which the relationship grows. She brings them to the physical gifts, but most importantly it offers hope and love.

Writing in this enchanting book is beautiful. His direct simplicity reflects the austerity of Alaska atmosphere. The desert itself is an important sign. Jack reflects on the land flowing with milk and honey, which is to give the moose, caribou and bear. "What distinguishes the truth found. Alaska gave up anything easily. It was lean and indifferent to the wild man in a fight."

Only someone intimately familiar with Alaska can write so eloquently about her beauty and futility. This unique story masterfully contrasts the isolation and peace in the country with snow-covered beauty and joy found in simple life. Ms. Ivey aptly captures the mystique of the contrast compared to the reality of homesteading in Alaska in 1920.

Eowyn LeMay Ivey grew up in Alaska and lives there with his wife and children. She received a BA in journalism and a minor in creative writing honors program at Western Washington University and studied creative nonfiction at the University of Alaska Anchorage graduate program. She worked as an award-winning journalist at the newspaper frontiersman for nearly 10 years. Snow baby is her debut novel.
